Red-Handed

Rising sea temperatures are a leading cause of the widespread and rapid growth of algae, which while visually interesting, shows a darker side to the often-detrimental effects climate change has on the biodiversity of the planet. Red tides specifically are caused by an influx of red dinoflagellates, causing a red discoloration of ocean water, which can result in the death of fish, mammals, birds, and other wildlife. This collection is meant to bring environmental awareness to red tides and the effects of global warming using the interaction between visual weight and movement based design, dyeing techniques and textural elements reminiscent of the ocean.
